The verge flower mix is a carefully selected blend of flower seeds, specifically developed for sowing along roadside verges, grass edges, field margins, and other open areas. The purpose of this mix is to transform often bare or monotonous spaces into flower-rich zones with high ecological value. With its variety of colorful and nectar-rich flowers, the verge flower mix actively contributes to increasing biodiversity. The flowers in this mix attract a wide range of beneficial insects, including bees, butterflies, bumblebees, hoverflies, and other helpful pollinators. Flower-rich verges not only provide a food source for insects but also serve as important links in the ecosystem. They act as ecological corridors between different green areas, which is essential for maintaining healthy insect populations.
This verge flower mix consists of a varied selection of native and well-known flower and plant species, including: Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris), Shepherd’s Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris), Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia), Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus), Oxeye Daisy (Chrysanthemum leucanthemum), Wild Carrot (Daucus carota), Alfalfa (Medicago sativa), Evening Primrose (Silene latifolia), St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum), Parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), Bird’s-foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi), Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), Narrowleaf Plantain (Plantago lanceolata), Sorrel (Rumex acetosa), Meadow Buttercup (Ranunculus acris), Crimson Clover (Trifolium incarnatum), Red Clover (Trifolium pratense), White Clover (Trifolium repens), Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), and Vetch (Vicia sativa).
Together, these species ensure a long flowering period, diversity in flower shapes, and stable vegetation. An important advantage of this verge flower mix is that it is low-maintenance. Depending on the composition, the plants can also tolerate dry conditions, requiring only minimal watering. The mix is usually sown in the spring or early summer, and under favorable conditions, the flowers begin to bloom approximately six to eight weeks after sowing. For optimal results, it is recommended to use about 2 to 4 grams of seeds per square meter, depending on the desired flower density.
One 5-gram pack of verge flower mix is sufficient for just over 1 square meter.
Outdoor sowing: March - June
Germination: 14 - 28 days
Germination temp.: 18 - 20 °C
Sowing depth: shallow - ½ cm
Planting position: sunny
Flowering period: June - October
Before sowing this flower mix, first prepare the area where you want to sow. Do this by removing all grass, weeds, roots, stones, and other debris from the soil. Loosen the soil thoroughly and break it up finely. Flower mix seeds are always sown outdoors. Sow directly at the intended location from March onwards, preferably in a sunny spot. Because the seeds are often very small, it is advisable to mix them with some dry, fine sand. This makes it easier to sow them thinly and evenly. Broadcast the seeds evenly and cover them with a thin layer of seed compost, or lightly rake them into the soil. The seeds of verge flowers are usually very small and require light to germinate. Therefore, they should only be sown superficially, to a maximum depth of 3 - 6 millimetres. Press the seeds gently into the soil or rake them in lightly, but do not cover them too deeply with soil. After sowing, it is important to keep the soil slightly moist until the seeds have germinated. Water gently using a fine spray to prevent the seeds from washing away. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 28 days, depending on weather conditions and the composition of the mix.
Once the plants are well established, watering can be reduced. By avoiding overly dense sowing and allowing the plants to set seed after flowering, the flower mix can naturally regenerate itself. Many verge flowers bloom 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, although biennial species may only flower in the following year. In late summer, after the flowers have finished blooming, the area can be mown to a height of approximately 5 cm. Allow the cuttings to dry for a few days and then gently beat them with a spade so the seeds can fall back onto the soil. This will help ensure a beautiful, colourful flower meadow again the following year. This flower mix blooms from June through October.
