Spring onion Red Toga is a red spring onion variety. Spring onion is also called scallions and green onions. Red Toga is a hardy perennial that is usually grown as an annual in our climate (Netherlands). Spring onion Red Toga is a member of the daffodil family (Amaryllidaceae) just like: Wild garlic, Chives, Chinese Chives, Narcissus, Leek and of course the Onion. Spring onion originally comes from South America and Africa. This deliciously mild tasting onion variety does not form a real bulb at the bottom of the stem, but more of a small thickening. The stems eventually color a bright pinkish red with a piece of white and green leaf on top. Everything of this spring onion variety is edible. The taste of Red Toga is deliciously soft and mild and is reminiscent of the taste of leek.
Spring onion Red Toga is the most commonly used onion for successive sowing periods. This onion tastes delicious when harvested young. The taste of Spring onion Red Toga becomes spicier when the thickenings at the bottom of the stem become thicker. It is a tasty, easy to grow and indispensable vegetable in every (vegetable) garden. Spring onion Red Toga is a very versatile and healthy vegetable that can be prepared in many different ways. Spring onion Red Toga can be boiled, grilled, fried, stir-fried, roasted, stewed and used very finely chopped in salads. Spring onion Red Toga has a delicious, mild onion flavour with a crunchy bite. Spring onion Red Toga can also be used in salads, soups, sauces, pasta sauces and in all other dishes with onion. Spring onion Red Toga can also be easily grown in pots, containers, vegetable garden containers and in a mixed border. Can be harvested in various stages and can therefore be used for a long time. Sow as soon as the soil can be worked in the open ground in a sunny spot with partial shade in well-drained soil. Sow in rows that are 15 - 20 cm apart. Sow the seeds close together to ensure that the bulbs do not grow too large. Keep moist and weed-free.
Harvest the spring onions after about 60 days and leave a few specimens for a late harvest. Do not sow onions in soil where onions were grown the previous year. Onions need nutritious, moist soil that has been fertilized with some compost. This spring onion can be harvested in its entirety, but it is also possible to harvest only the top leaf. The rest of the spring onion can continue to grow in this way. Good neighbours for spring onions are parsley, carrots and spinach. These species distract the onion fly. Place anti-onion fly nets over the onions to protect them.
