Evening primrose is a hardy, beautifully fragrant and attractive biennial with large, bright yellow flowers. It is also known as common evening primrose or night candle. The flowers open in the evening and remain open throughout the night, attracting moths and other nocturnal pollinators to your garden. They release a delightful fresh, lemon-like fragrance that perfumes the evening air. Although the plant is cold hardy, young plants should be protected from severe frost. Evening primrose is an excellent choice for borders, flower beds and naturalistic gardens. It is especially valuable in wildlife gardens because it readily self-seeds, creating attractive drifts of flowers year after year. Evening primrose oil is widely used in herbal medicine, homeopathy and the cosmetic industry. It flowers from July to September.
