Kale Scarlet is a very tender, sweet kale variety. The leaves are curled with a beautiful red-purple colour. This very delicious and healthy kale variety can grow to a high size. Harvest from September or leave it in the soil to freeze over. This makes the kale sweeter and more tender. Scarlet can be grown in the Autumn and the Winter.
The heavy curled and cut leaves have a very delicious sweet flavour and a very tender structure. Use Scarlet in mashed potatoe stews, casseroles, stir-fries, soups and a cooked vegetable. You can also use it in dishes with kale. Can be frozen to store. Hardy annual. Height: 80 - 100 cm.

Sow outdoors on a well dug, well manured and well prepared seedbed from the end of April. Sow in rows approx. 50 cm apart and cover the seeds with a layer of soil. Keep moist and weedfree during germination and beyond.
Transplant the seedlings approx. 5 - 6 weeks after germination to a sunny plot with some shade. Keep the plants approx. 60 - 75 cm apart. Keep moist and weedfree.
Protect the plants against birds, snails and other pests. Don't sow or plant any cabbage on a plot where any member of the cabbage family has been grown in a previous year. Harvest this kale from September. Cut the needed leaves with scissors or the plant from the bottom up or harvest the whole kale. This kale can be kept frozen to store. First slice the leaves finely, than blance them shortly and then they can be frozen. Harvest the kale from September till February. You need to harvest all kale for the end of February. You can leave the kale in the soil to let it freeze over. This makes the leaves more tender and sweet.
