Start sowing indoors from february till march. Use trays filled with some moist potting soil. Sow thinly and shallow and cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, because lettuce is a light germinator. Keep moist and cover with a lid. Remove the lid when the seedlings appear. Replant the seedlings to seperate pots after 3 - 4 weeks. Plant outside, when there is no longer any frosts. Keep them 20 - 30 cm apart, to allow for heading.

In may, when there is no longer any chance of nightfrost, you can sow outdoors.  Sow in rows about 20 - 30 cm apart. and keep the seeds 20 cm apart. Sow 3 seeds together and cover them lightly. Thin them to 1 seedling after 3-4 weeks.

Sow a thiny amount every 3 weeks, to have a continious harvest. Keep the soil most and water regularly in drought. Protect the seedlings and plants against slugs, snails and other pests.
