Butterhead lettuce Marvel of 4 seasons is an organically grown, very hardy, reliable and French Heirloom variety that can be grown in cooler periods very succesfully. Butterhead lettuce Marvel of 4 seasons is a very hardy and reliable French Heirloom variety. Butterhead Lettuce Marvel of Four Seasons is a strong and reliable French heirloom variety, renowned for its versatility and excellent flavour. As its name suggests, this lettuce is suitable for a long growing season and can even be sown and harvested during the cooler months of the year. It forms loose heads of fresh, crisp leaves with a beautiful dark green colour and striking red edges. In cooler weather, the red pigmentation intensifies, giving the lettuce an especially decorative appearance.
In the kitchen, Marvel of 4 Seasons is an exceptionally versatile and flavourful lettuce. The leaves are firm, juicy and pleasantly crisp, with a fresh, mildly spicy flavour. The loose heads make it easy to separate the leaves, making them ideal for both simple green salads and more elaborate mixed salads. This lettuce pairs beautifully with classic salad ingredients such as cucumber, tomatoes, radishes, carrots and fresh herbs, but it is equally delicious with more refined ingredients including goat's cheese, blue cheese, nuts, avocado, eggs, smoked salmon or grilled vegetables. A dressing made with olive oil, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar or mustard perfectly complements its fresh flavour and crisp texture. The sturdy leaves also make an excellent base for substantial salads or as a garnish for warm dishes. Use them as a fresh foundation for potato, pasta or rice salads, or add them to wraps and sandwiches. The large leaves are also perfect as healthy lettuce wraps filled with chicken, tofu, hummus, tuna or grilled vegetables. Their firmness allows them to hold their shape well while adding a refreshing crunch to every bite. For a different culinary experience, the leaves can be briefly grilled or sautéed. Gentle heat softens the leaves and enhances their flavour, especially when served with garlic, olive oil, Parmesan cheese or toasted nuts. Harvest the heads once they are well developed and the leaves appear firm and fresh. Young leaves are especially tender, while older leaves develop a firmer texture and a richer flavour. Store the lettuce in a cool place and use it as fresh as possible to preserve its crispness and nutritional value. With its attractive appearance, long harvesting season and outstanding culinary versatility, Butterhead Lettuce Marvel of 4 Seasons is a valuable classic for every vegetable garden and kitchen. This French heirloom variety proves that a traditional butterhead lettuce can be both simple and surprisingly sophisticated. Non hardy annual.

From March onwards, sow indoors or under glass in light, moist seed compost. Sow the seeds thinly over the surface and cover them with only a very thin layer of seed compost, as lettuce is a light germinator and requires light for successful germination. Keep the compost evenly moist, but avoid making it waterlogged. At a temperature of 10 - 20 °C, the seeds will germinate in approximately 7 - 10 days. After about 3 - 4 weeks, when the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or carefully plant them out. Move the plants outdoors once all risk of night frost has passed. Space the plants 20 - 30 cm apart to allow the heads to develop properly.
From May onwards, when there is no longer any risk of frost, the seeds can be sown directly outdoors. Choose a sunny position with loose, fertile soil. Sow in rows 20 - 30 cm apart. Every 20 cm, sow approximately three seeds per sowing spot and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings have emerged.
After 3 - 4 weeks, thin the seedlings, leaving the strongest plant at each sowing spot to give the heads enough room to develop fully.
For healthy growth, do not allow the soil to dry out. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the heads are forming. Maintaining consistent soil moisture produces tender, crisp leaves and helps prevent premature bolting. Sowing every three weeks will provide a continuous supply of fresh lettuce throughout the growing season. Watch out for slugs and aphids, which may damage young plants and developing heads. Inspect the plants regularly and take action if necessary. The heads can be harvested approximately 45 - 55 days after sowing. Harvest once the heads are well formed and the leaves are firm and fresh. Regular harvesting ensures the best flavour and texture.
