Runner Bean Golden Gate is an exceptionally tasty and productive runner bean variety with beautiful golden-yellow, long and tender pods. This classic climbing bean combines a high yield with excellent culinary qualities, making it a valuable addition to any vegetable garden. The plant grows vigorously. Therefore, provide Runner Bean Golden Gate with sturdy support, such as poles, netting, or a trellis. The plants produce abundant pods over a long period, and regular harvesting encourages the formation of new beans. Runner Bean Golden Gate is resistant against the Rolmozaïekvirus. This variety has a very good harvest and can be harvested much longer than other runner bean varieties.
In the kitchen, Runner Bean Golden Gate is highly versatile. The young, tender pods have a fine texture and a mild, full bean flavour. They are delicious traditionally prepared as cooked runner beans with butter and a touch of nutmeg, but are also excellent for stir-fries, oven dishes, soups, and stews. Their striking golden-yellow colour adds a beautiful accent to vegetable dishes and salads. Runner Bean Golden Gate is not only a delicious vegetable, but also an attractive climbing plant that, with its vigorous growth and long harvest period, deserves a special place in the vegetable garden. Sowing indoors can be done from April, approximately 6 weeks before the last night frost. Sow the seeds 3 - 4 cm deep in separate pots filled with well-moistened seed compost. Runner beans are dark germinators and need to be covered sufficiently with soil in order to germinate properly. For faster and more even germination, you can soak the seeds in lukewarm water for approximately 48 hours before sowing. Place the pots in a warm location and maintain a constant temperature of around 18 - 22 °C. Keep the soil lightly moist, but avoid making it too wet.
When the young plants are strong enough and there is no longer any risk of night frost, they can be planted out in the vegetable garden. If desired, allow the plants to harden off first for several days (10 - 14 days) by gradually exposing them to outdoor temperatures.
Sowing directly outdoors is possible from mid-May, once the risk of night frost has passed and the soil has warmed sufficiently in the spring sunshine. Beans do not like cold, wet soil, so it is better to wait a little longer during periods of low temperatures. Sow the seeds 3 - 4 cm deep and allow enough space between the plants. Since runner beans are vigorous climbers, they need sturdy support such as poles, netting, or a trellis. Water the plants regularly, especially during warm and dry periods. By harvesting the pods regularly, you encourage the plant to continue producing new flowers and pods. The harvest period generally runs from July through September.
